MEA to host India-Pacific Islands Sustainable Development Conference

New Delhi, May 12 : In order to enhance the cooperation between India and Pacific Island Countries on the issue of Sustainable Development, the Ministry of External Affairs will be hosting a two day  ‘India-Pacific Islands Sustainable Development Conference’ in Suva, Fiji  which will begin from May 25.

Speaking to the media, MEA officials informed that the two day convention is being held under the banner of the Forum for India Pacific Islands Co-operation (FIPIC). The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) will be the key knowledge partner for this event. Gen. V K Singh, Minister of State for External Affairs, will host Ministers from the 14 Pacific Island countries at the Conference.

According to MEA officials, two Presidents and three Prime Ministers from Pacific Island Countries have confirmed their participation in the Conference. Along with this serval Business leaders, academics, civil society members and youth from the region would be participating in this Conference. With an annual trade of about USD 300 million between India and these countries, the two-day meet will explore the ways to enhance business ties and investment opportunities.

The two-day  long conference will undertake the  issues such as the blue economy, adaptation-mitigation practices for climate change, disaster preparedness, health, the International Solar Alliance as well as finding practical solutions to Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) implementation. The meeting is expected to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and experience, and initiate public-private partnerships and collaborations for the benefit of all participating countries.

Forums like Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI), Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the Pacific Islands Development Forum (PIDF) will be the other key partners for the conference.

The FIPIC platform was formed in November 2014, to strengthen India’s relationship with the Pacific Island Countries. The first FIPIC summit was held at the level of Heads of Government in November 2014 in Suva, Fiji, followed by the FIPIC-II summit held in August 2015, in Jaipur, India.
